types of sober living
Sober living homes are organized into 4 Levels, as identified by the National Association of Recovery Residences (NARR) and vary greatly in the quality of their programs and amenities. The 3 main Levels, according to the type of care they provide, are as follows
-
Level I – Oxford housing: This is the most common type in the US, peer run and operate at the minimally restrictive level, with far fewer rules or guidelines. Almost no recovery-orientated structure (other than attending support/ step groups)
-
Level II – Monitored sober living homes: Within these facilities, a house manager or resident has often been allocated to manage the recovery house.
-
Level III – Supervised housing/Intensive Sober Living: These are more formal facilities with a hierarchy of qualified staffing that often provides case management, employment with transportation and life skills classes. These transitional type housing programs have better accountability and structure compared to others. Some of these programs are at no cost to the client
