Knowing God

They say they are one spirit with God, the temple of Spirit, reconciled, made new, and brought near. Yet much of what they believe about God, humanity, salvation, prayer, and the future continues to be rooted in separation. What makes this contradiction so significant is how directly the language of union runs through the New Testament. Eventually it shapes the way we experience God, the way we understand ourselves, the way we relate to other people, and even what we believe

Sin does not need to remain the conversation. The law that defined and empowered it has reached its end, God is not counting humanity’s trespasses against them, and Jesus refused to condemn even the person caught in the very act. The Father has revealed His heart, and His heart is life. The conversation has changed.

There is an assumption about God that has become so deeply embedded in religious thought that many people no longer recognize it as an assumption. It is treated as self-evident that God is first and foremost a judge, that humanity stands before him as defendants, and that righteousness requires him to decide who deserves mercy and who deserves condemnation.

One week, people are told that salvation is not by works, that humanity is saved by grace, that sins have been forgiven, and that the work of Christ is finished. The next week, they are told that God will eventually evaluate them according to their works and determine their final outcome based on what they have done. The question is, what was Jesus saying?

There is a popular idea woven throughout much of religious theology that God is a God of vindication. This language appears in teachings about the cross, resurrection, judgment, the destruction of Jerusalem, fulfilled prophecy, the suffering of believers, and the eventual collapse of oppressive systems. God is portrayed as proving that Jesus was right, proving that the apostles were right, proving that the faithful were right, proving that one covenant community was right...

Jesus was the manifestation of what Christ is. Christ within is the continuation of that same reality now present in humanity.
